Central nervous system manifestations in HIV: magnetic resonance imaging pictorial review

چکیده

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a member of the Retroviridae (retrovirus) family. It associated with immunodeficiency, neurological diseases and neoplasms. With use antiretroviral therapy (ART), prognosis people who are infected HIV has improved, incidence HIV-related central nervous system (CNS) markedly decreased. In spite that mortality from CNS remains significant. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) improved perspective for help early diagnosis prompt treatment. There various conditions which come under spectrum manifestations e.g., encephalopathy, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), primary lymphoma (PCNSL), toxoplasmosis, other caused by opportunistic infections like cryptococcosis, tuberculosis immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). Each condition shows certain specific MRI features aid in diagnosis. Although, distinguishing between based on alone sometimes difficult, this review, we discuss can contribute to their differentiation.

Central nervous system lymphoma: magnetic resonance imaging features at presentation.

OBJECTIVE This paper aimed at studying presentations of the central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma using structural images obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS The MRI features at presentation of 15 patients diagnosed with CNS lymphoma in a university hospital, between January 1999 and March 2011, were analyzed by frequency and cross tabulation. RESULTS All patients had supr...

Central nervous system magnetic resonance imaging aspects of superficial siderosis.

A 68-year-old man was evaluated with progressive gait difficulties, first noticed three years before. Neurological examination disclosed paraparetic spastic gait and lower limbs hyperreflexia with bilateral Babinski sign; mild left upper limb cerebellar ataxia; and left hearing loss. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed rims of hypointensity on T2 around the brainstem, cerebellum, and sp...

Central nervous system leukemia on magnetic resonance imaging.

A 32-year-old man 5 years previously received allogeneic bone marrow transplantation from his mother for Philadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He presented with headache, nausea, and pain in the left arm. The neurologic examination revealed no abnormalities except for stiffness of the neck. Gadolinium-enhanced T1weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed diffuse c...
